Making It Official

I think we’ve all known for a while that Manchester United wasn’t making it to the Champions League next season.

On Saturday, that became official. United blew another late lead and drew 1-1 with Burnley at Old Trafford — a result that made finishing in the Top Four this season a mathematical impossibility.

Not that it was all that possible to begin with. United’s best shot has long been UEFA potentially granting the Premiership an extra spot because it’s scared of the Super League (not to be confused with the Akufo League) and Manchester City getting kicked out of the Premier and Champions Leagues for breaching financial rules.

In the end, neither will probably happen — which means United can look forward to those long trips to Romania or Kazakhstan next season to compete for the Europa or Conference Leagues.
